Although assigned to a particular packet, the MPLS label does not necessarily encode the packet's network layer address, just its next-hop that will allow the packet to be forwarded to its destination, because many packets that are in the same FEC will be assigned the same label. This means that the next-hop choice may span multiple packets to many destinations. Thus, an MPLS label really encodes a 6 CHAPTER1 Introduction FEC identifier. For example, ifa FEC has classified all packets destined for the same next-hop based on multiple layer-3 destination network prefixes, all of the packets matching that FEC will be assigned the same label (and next-hop).

Finally, Chapter 12 wraps up the book by first providing an extensive overview of what is on the horizon of MPLS network management. The chapter gives a brief overview of each topic, as well as pointers that you can use to investigate each topic in further detail. The organization of the book is such that the chapters in the first part can, in general, be applied in networks employing any form of MPLS. This includes MPLS-enabled networks that only use LDP, but also covers ones that further add traffic engineering and/or VPN applications.

We assume you have a good level of understanding of MPLS already and that the introduction given in this chapter can be used as a refresher. Advanced readers may skim the beginning of the chapter, but we recommend at least glancing at the latter half of the chapter. If you are in need of a more in-depth introduction to MPLS and SNMP, consult the references given in the Further Reading section at the end of the chapter as well as those related to MPLS and SNMP in the Bibliography at the end of the book.
