Long before the war was over, we all caught malaria at one time or another. I myself only ceased to have recurrent malarial attacks after I arrived in England in 1946. One gratifying aspect of this otherwise uneventful Guilin episode stood out in my mind right through the years.

During the fortnight which followed, I had to survive a crash course, whereby I was initially made to learn a new vocabulary relating to the different parts of naval vessels.
