When I turned to the epistles for sermon material, I apparently found other letters to be more relevant to the needs of the congregation than Paul's two letters to the first-century church in Thessalonica.

In Paul's letters, an opening thanksgiving section usually serves notice concerning the major content of the rest of the letter. Paul also introduces exhortation as part of the main letter body, to give specific pastoral and ethical counsel. Other adaptations in a given letter often reveal something about the writer's particular purpose. First Thessalonians features an unusually lengthy thanksgiving section; the opening in 1:2-10 seems to be resumed in 2:13. A reader of this letter might well ask what this unusual characteristic of the letter reveals about the author's main intent.
